General
I am Nicholas Herrmann and I will have a BS in Biology and a BA in Spanish from the University of Cincinnati in Spring of 2014.I graduated in 2010 from St. Xavier High School, an all male Jesuit college preparatory high school. I take great pride in my academic achievements, but I understand academia is only part of a high school and college career.
Others say I am amiable and outgoing. I like to keep myself involved in campus organizations, volunteering, friends, and work. I strongly believe that every person has intrinsic value and something to teach, whether it be spoken or unspoken. This value for the human experience combined with my fascination with the natural sciences (biology and chemistry) is what drove me to want to work in healthcare. I just finished working as a State-Tested Nurse Aide in a sub-acute rehabilitation center, and now am studying abroad in the Dominican Republic.
I think that all healthy interactions with other people and with our own self depend on one thing: attitude. Therefore I try to maintain a positive outlook on life; as perspective is everything. In my opinion, ethnocentrism is the root of almost any problem, especially in today's world. I believe in the power of people, and I think everyone should be open to experience new cultures and and new beliefs.

Goals
During LeaderShape, we learned about goal-making. Short term goals are both feasible and not difficult, while stretch goals are large goals in the future that you aim to complete. I have three short term goals, and one stretch goal.
Firstly, I want to get my license to practice as a Physician Assistant. I have researched the position and schools heavily, and I have decided this would be an ideal job for me. Ideally, the program would include some Spanish component, such as medical Spanish. My goal is to be able to serve and help others, especially those of Hispanic origin who are traditionally and systematically disadvantaged by modern healthcare. I want to work in a community that has a mixture of English speakers and Spanish speakers.
A second goal of mine is to be a family oriented. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a middle class family that had stable parents and a stable income. I want to serve others in medicine, but I also want to offer my future family my time and give future children the same opportunities that I was given. I was raised in a tight family, and I plan to continue this tradition with my own family some day. Juggling work and family requires time management, but this is something I feel I excel at.
A third goal of mine is to continue volunteering. Through my volunteering experience and experiences with organizations like RAPP, I was able to truly recognize how lucky I am to have received the education and family support that I have. I am thankful for my stable family and the sacrifices they made to send me to a private high school. I am thankful that I never went hungry or had to fear extreme violence or sickness in my community. Knowing that there are billions of people out there who never had the opportunities I had instills in me a desire to do something about it. I want to use my knowledge and talents to work in medical clinics in Central America and South America, if only for a brief amount of time every year or every few years. I need to give back: I can not see myself living a satisfied life otherwise.
Finally, my stretch goal also involves health care. This goal involves experiencing the troubles, worries, and stories of Latino Americans with regard to healthcare. I would like to be able to vouch for these often looked over members of society so that they too can have equal access to quality healthcare, just as I was given. This is a giant goal indeed, but the goal is there and it is something I wish to pursue throughout my lifetime.
